WATER CONSERVATION

 

On 22nd March 2025, the world celebrated World water day. On this important day, the Indian government launched a campaign named Jal Shakti Abhiyaan – Catch the rain 2025. It was started under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. This project emphasises the importance of communities in the conservation of water.

The policy makers of Bharat must focus on several points for the conservation of water.

·    While making the policies on water, the policymakers must focus on the needs on every sector, such as industry, agriculture,  It , textiles, etc. Before making the policy, government officials must have to visit on the ground to know the real condition at the ground level.

·    The policymakers must have to focus on the vulnerable groups of India who are very sensitive towards water .

·    The policymakers must have to ensure about lesser leakage of water by various sewage systems. These waters split in very huge amount which disturbs the human beings as well as it becomes useless. The proper management of this water can reduce the dependency on the ground water.

·    Lesser fertilizer, insecticide, pesticides, etc. must be used in the agricultural field. After the proper irrigation these waters contaminated the groundwater by ensuring the reach of harmful chemicals there.

·    The policy should be made after considering the proper management of natural resources like trees, water, mountains etc.

·    The river joining project should be run very fast. This project will disturb the flora and fauna of various forests and  natural things but it will definitely create a better future by ensuring a negligible flood in flood prone area .

·    More and more plantations must be done to ensure the better raining.  The more raining will happen , the temperature of the earth will be under control . Otherwise the countries will see a huge rise in temperature within few decades, which will be life-threatening to us.

·    When the policymakers made policy, they must focus on the livelihood of the tribal groups whose life totally depend upon the JAL JUNGLE AUR JAMEEN.

Their suggestions will be more important to ensure the water conservation.

Oceanic Omens: What Do Deep-Sea Creatures and Mass Marine Gatherings Tell Us?

 

In recent times, unusual ocean events have sparked curiosity and concern. From the surfacing of the so-called “doomsday” oarfish and a lifeless anglerfish, to mass fish appearances in Kerala and a staggering 6.41 lakh olive ridley sea turtles washing up on Odisha’s shores, these events raise questions about our changing marine environment. Some scientists even suggest that fluctuating sea temperatures over recent years might be playing a part in these occurrences.

Oarfish: The Deep-Sea Doomsday Fish

Oarfish (Regalecus glesne) are legendary for their enormous, ribbon-like bodies that can exceed 11 meters in length. These elusive deep-sea dwellers typically inhabit the dark depths, sometimes hundreds of meters below the surface. When an oarfish is found washed ashore or floating lifelessly at sea, it has often been seen as an ominous sign by coastal communities. However, marine experts believe that such events are more likely linked to natural causes—such as disease, injury, or environmental disturbances—than to any impending disaster.

Vulnerabilities:

  • Temperature Sensitivity: Being adapted to the stable conditions of deep water, oarfish may struggle when sudden changes in temperature occur, which can disrupt their metabolism and behavior.
  • Habitat Disturbance: Pollution and other environmental stressors can impact the deep-sea ecosystems where oarfish thrive.

Anglerfish: The Luminous Lure from the Abyss

Anglerfish are another marvel of the deep, renowned for the bioluminescent lure that dangles from their heads. This specialized adaptation helps them attract prey in the pitch-black depths of the ocean. The rare occurrence of a dead anglerfish surfacing can signal that these creatures, too, are affected by changes in their environment.

Vulnerabilities:

  • Pressure and Temperature Changes: Adapted to high-pressure, low-temperature environments, anglerfish become highly vulnerable when exposed to the drastically different conditions at the surface.
  • Environmental Disruption: Shifts in water temperature—possibly due to climate change—can disturb their natural habitat, affecting their ability to hunt and reproduce.

Mass Fish Appearances in Kerala

Reports of large numbers of fish appearing along Kerala’s coastal waters have raised alarms and speculations. Although mass appearances can sometimes be a natural phenomenon, they may also indicate underlying environmental stress. Industrial discharge, pollution, or sudden changes in water temperature can disturb aquatic ecosystems, leading to unusual behavioral patterns among fish.

Vulnerabilities:

  • Pollution: Contaminants and industrial effluents reduce oxygen levels in the water, directly impacting fish health.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: As with many marine species, fish are sensitive to changes in water temperature, which can affect their distribution and survival.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles: A Coastal Spectacle in Odisha

Odisha’s beaches have witnessed the gathering of an astounding approximate count of 6.41 lakh olive ridley sea turtles. While mass nesting events—known as arribadas—are natural for these turtles, environmental factors could be influencing these occurrences or their subsequent survival rates.

Vulnerabilities:

  • Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination: The sex of hatchlings is determined by the incubation temperature, meaning that fluctuating sea and beach temperatures can skew population ratios.
  • Bycatch and Pollution: These turtles face risks from fishing practices (such as entanglement in nets) and the ingestion of marine debris, both of which can lead to injury or death.
  • Habitat Loss: Coastal development and erosion can diminish nesting habitats, threatening future generations.

Environmental Concerns: The Role of Fluctuating Sea Temperatures

A common thread running through these events is the potential impact of changing sea temperatures. Scientists have noted that over recent years, variations in ocean temperature—driven by climate change and other environmental factors—can disturb deep-sea ecosystems. These fluctuations may contribute to:

  • Stress on Deep-Sea Life: Sudden temperature shifts can disorient or physically stress species like oarfish and anglerfish, making them more vulnerable to illness or environmental hazards.
  • Altered Migratory and Nesting Patterns: For species such as fish and sea turtles, even minor changes in temperature can have significant impacts on breeding, feeding, and migratory behaviors.
  • Increased Susceptibility to Pollution: Warmer waters can exacerbate the effects of pollution, further degrading the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

Conclusion

While the sight of a dead oarfish or anglerfish might stir up superstitions about impending disasters, these events are more accurately seen as signals of environmental stress. An Inferno: Jaipur Ajmer Highway

On Friday, December 20, 2024, a gas truck collided with multiple cars on the Jaipur-Ajmer National Highway, causing a large fire that claimed eleven lives and injured about thirty more. The fire swiftly spread over a 300-meter stretch of road, consuming over 35 cars in the process.

The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker was doing a U-turn on the highway at Bhankrota early in the morning when it collided with a truck approaching from the other direction. They were struck by a couple additional fast-moving cars, which caused an explosion that widened the fire. The death toll in the incident keeps on increasing.

One popular fuel that is well-known for its effectiveness and adaptability is liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG. It is a necessary component of modern life since it powers houses, businesses, and automobiles. However, there are serious safety dangers associated with its transportation, particularly when it comes to road tankers. LPG tanker accidents have the potential to have devastating outcomes, such as flames, explosions, and fatalities. Thus, it is crucial to make sure that LPG is transported safely.

LPG is a colorless, odorless, and flammable gas (but an odorant is added to detect leaks). It is kept in a liquid state under pressure and expands quickly when released. Its characteristics, like its strong flammability and capacity to combine with air to generate explosive combinations, make it a possible transportation danger.

92.1) Risks associated with LPG Tankers:


1. Driver Error: Accidents may result from driver fatigue, distraction, or inadequate training.
2. Vehicle Malfunction: Accidents may result from tire blowouts, brake failure, or other technical problems.
3. Road Conditions: The likelihood of accidents is increased by poorly maintained roads, steep curves, and meteorological conditions like rain or fog.
4. Improper Loading: The tanker's stability may be jeopardized if the LPG is overloaded or improperly secured.
5. Collision: Collisions with other cars brought on by careless driving, speeding, or disregard for traffic laws.

92.2) Preventive Measures:


1. Adherence to Regulations
Vehicle Standards: Verify that all LPG tankers meet safety requirements, such as adequate insulation, sturdy construction, and pressure relief valves.
Licensing for drivers: For the delivery of hazardous materials, drivers need to possess specific training and licenses.

2. Auto Repair
Frequent examinations of tires, brakes, and other important parts.
Repairing any flaws found right away.

3. Driver Awareness and Training 
Extensive instruction on how to handle crises, drive defensively, and obey speed limits.
Frequent refresher training to guarantee a current understanding of safety procedures.

4. Route Planning: 
Steer clear of crowded places and use approved routes for hazardous products. When making travel plans, try to avoid traveling during periods of high traffic or bad weather.

5. Emergency Preparedness 
Provide emergency communication devices, spill control kits, and fire extinguishers to tankers.
Create emergency response plans and distribute them to local authorities and drivers.

6. Technology and Monitoring
Set up GPS tracking devices to keep an eye on tanker movements.
Employ sensors to find leaks or variations in tanker pressure.

7. Collaboration and Public Awareness
Inform local populations about the safety of LPG along transit routes.
Work along with the local government to set up accident response teams.

Weather forecasting in Villages

Recently, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj issued guidelines regarding weather forecasts in every village. Let’s learn more about this facility provided by the Union government.

Weather forecasting:  According to the latest notification issued by the Union minister of Panchayati Raj,  weather forecasting will be done for five days in a week. The details will be updated every hour and this facility will be available at Panchayat level. This great initiative is jointly organized by three organizations namely the INDIAN METEROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT,  the UNION MINISTRY OF PANCHAYATI RAJ, AND the MINISTRY OF EARTH AND SCIENCES. The aim of this initiative is to empower the rural communities and enhance disaster preparedness at the grassroots level... The weather forecasting data will be available at the portal of e- Gram Swaraj, Gram Manchitra portal, and also on meri panchayat application.

The following data will be shown in the portal/app …

1.   Current temperature of that panchayat

2.   Wind speed of that panchayat

3.   Rainfall and relative humidity

4.   Wind direction

5.   Wind speed

6.   Cloud cover(in %)

Here in the above paragraph, we have mentioned the Indian meteorology department let’s discuss some of its achievements.

1.   The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has declared IMD as a regional specialized meteorological center

2.   The monsoon mission of IMD(2012) has started long range monsoon forecasting.

3.   In the SAFAR initiative of IMD, the air quality index is also monitored.

4.   The IMD has also started the WIFEX initiative which does the WINTER FOG EXPERIMENTS.

5.   INSAT AND DOPPLER radars belong to IMD.

Significance of this initiative.:

1.   Agriculture and food security: On regular updates of weather the farmers will be happier because they will do their work which will be suitable for their crop. So the food wastage and time wastage can be reduced very sharply.

2.   Disaster management: The regular update of weather will also help in proper disaster management. The economic and livelihood losses will be very much reduced.

3.   Economic impact: Due to proper update of weather, the loss of economy will be reduced very much.

4.   Logistics: The weather update will provide happiness to Logistics and transport providers. The clear weather helps them to provide the essential items at a very accurate and right time 

5.   Resource management: The weather forecast will also help with proper resource management like the grains to godown, the infrastructure materials at their safe places, etc.

6.   Public health and safety:  The proper update in weather will be better for Public health and safety in extreme summer people can be saved from heat strokes, in extreme winter people can be saved by severe cold winds, etc.

CHALLENGES OF WEATHER FORECAST AT THE PANCHAYAT LEVEL:

1.   Since India is a tropical country where there is extreme variability of weather at a few kilometers of distance. This will create huge chaos for the authorities providing this facility.

2.   Being the most heavily populated nation in the world,  our Bharat has hyper locality problem. This can create a disturbance in the network due to which the improper news can spread among the villagers.

3.   We have such neighbors who never support us in any place. So we cannot expect them that they will provide any type of information which is needed by us.

4.   The observational infrastructure of India especially in weather forecasting is very bad. At several events, we have seen IMD fails like the Uttarakhand flash flood in 2013, etc.

Since the initiative is very good the challenges are also very huge. Let us see how the government faces these challenges …..

The Chernobyl Disaster: A Dive into the World's Worst Nuclear Accident

Introduction

On April 26, 1986, the world witnessed the most catastrophic nuclear disaster in history: the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in the Soviet Union, now present-day Ukraine. The disaster shocked the world, exposing the devastating potential of nuclear energy when things go wrong. While the world has moved on, the shadow of Chernobyl lingers, serving as a haunting reminder of the dangers of nuclear power.

The Lead-Up: How Did It Happen?

To understand the disaster, we need to go back to the early morning hours of April 26, 1986. The night shift crew at Reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was conducting a safety test. The test's purpose was to simulate a power outage to ensure that in such an event, the reactor could safely shut down and cool without needing the main power supply.

But things didn't go according to plan. A series of errors were made, both human and technical. The reactor, an RBMK-1000, had a design flaw that made it inherently unstable at low power levels. The operators, unaware of these risks, pushed the reactor to its limits. When they attempted to shut it down by inserting control rods into the core, it triggered a massive power spike. Within seconds, the reactor's fuel rods began to overheat, and at 1:23:58 AM, two explosions rocked the facility, blowing off the reactor's 1,000-ton steel and concrete lid.

The Immediate Aftermath: Chaos and Confusion

The explosion released a massive amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Initially, there was confusion about what had happened. The plant workers and emergency responders were ill-prepared to handle such a situation. Many of the first responders, unaware of the radioactive danger, rushed to the scene without proper protective gear. Tragically, many of them suffered from acute radiation sickness and died within weeks.

The Soviet government initially tried to downplay the severity of the incident. It wasn't until radioactive particles were detected across Europe that the full extent of the disaster became clear. The city of Pripyat, home to the plant workers and their families, was not evacuated until 36 hours after the explosion. By then, the residents had been exposed to high levels of radiation.

The Evacuation and Exclusion Zone

When the order to evacuate Pripyat finally came, it was swift and abrupt. Residents were told to pack a few belongings and board buses. Most were under the impression that they would return home in a few days, but the reality was far different. Pripyat became a ghost town overnight, and its 50,000 residents would never return.

The Soviet authorities established an exclusion zone, initially a 30-kilometer radius around the plant, which has since expanded. This area remains uninhabitable due to high levels of radiation. Nature, however, has slowly reclaimed the land, with forests growing over abandoned buildings and wildlife thriving in the absence of human activity.

The Liquidators: The Heroes of Chernobyl

In the wake of the disaster, the Soviet Union mobilized over 600,000 workers, known as "liquidators," to contain the fallout. These included soldiers, firefighters, miners, and scientists, many of whom were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. They performed various tasks, from constructing the concrete sarcophagus that encased the reactor to cleaning up radioactive debris.

The liquidators are often regarded as heroes for their bravery and sacrifice. Many of them suffered from radiation-related illnesses, and a significant number lost their lives. The exact number of deaths resulting from the disaster is still debated, with estimates ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands.

The Environmental and Health Impact

The environmental and health impacts of the Chernobyl disaster are staggering. The explosion released large amounts of radioactive iodine-131, cesium-137, and strontium-90 into the environment. These isotopes have long half-lives, meaning the area will remain contaminated for centuries.

The health consequences for those exposed to the radiation have been severe. There was a dramatic increase in thyroid cancer cases, particularly among children who were exposed to radioactive iodine. Other cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues have also been linked to the disaster. The long-term effects are still being studied, and the full impact may not be known for generations.

The Sarcophagus and the New Safe Confinement

In the months following the disaster, a massive concrete sarcophagus was constructed to encase Reactor No. 4 and contain the radiation. However, this structure was hastily built and began to deteriorate over time, posing a risk of collapse.

In 2016, a new structure called the New Safe Confinement (NSC) was completed. This massive steel arch, the largest movable structure ever built, was slid into place over the existing sarcophagus. The NSC is designed to contain the reactor for at least the next 100 years, giving future generations the time and tools to eventually dismantle it safely.

The Legacy of Chernobyl

The Chernobyl disaster had profound effects on the world, both immediate and long-lasting. In the Soviet Union, it was a contributing factor to the collapse of the state, exposing the weaknesses of the government and its inability to manage such a crisis. The disaster also led to increased scrutiny of nuclear power worldwide. Many countries reevaluated their nuclear programs, with some scaling back or abandoning nuclear energy altogether.

In the years since the disaster, Chernobyl has become a symbol of the dangers of nuclear power and a focal point for debates about its future. The site itself has drawn interest from tourists, scientists, and even filmmakers, with the 2019 HBO miniseries "Chernobyl" bringing renewed attention to the disaster.

The Human Cost

Beyond the statistics and the environmental impact, the Chernobyl disaster is ultimately a story of human tragedy. The lives lost, the communities displaced, and the ongoing health struggles of those affected serve as a poignant reminder of the disaster's human cost. The survivors, known as "Chernobylites," continue to live with the consequences of that fateful day, many of them grappling with health issues, psychological trauma, and the loss of their homes and livelihoods.
