Cambodia and Thailand are the important members of the 10 member ASEAN group. The ASEAN nations are very important for south asia as they are like the European Union for Asia. There are no trade barriers among them. But nowadays this group is suffering from a heavy crisis. Myanmar (member nation) is suffering from military rule and civil war. Its important leaders are lying in jail. While Cambodia and Thailand are at war regarding the border crisis. This dispute started in May 2025 when a soldier of Cambodia was killed near PREAH VIHAR TEMPLE. In its response, Cambodia banned Thai goods on its border and closed key border crossings. On July 5, Thai soldiers were killed in a landmine explosion. Since then about 48 people have been killed while more than 3 lakh civilians have been displaced. In the same month, on the request of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Donald Trump became a mediator for both countries and announced a ceasefire. But after more landmine explosions, many Thai soldiers were killed in the months of October and November. Thailand broke the ceasefire and again attacked Cambodia.
This border crisis is more than one century
old. A treaty named FRANCO-SIAMASIS TREATY was signed in 1904 and 1907. This
treaty was regarding the demarcation of the border line. The line of
demarcation was drawn considering DANGREK RANGES as a midpoint between both the
countries. But the position of the temple was not cleared. After a few years, the temple was declared
as a UNESCO world heritage site. In 1962, the International Court declared it
as a part of Cambodia. But no proper
draft was sent to both nations. Thailand denied this decision and the border
dispute became unresolved.
To solve the dispute, ASEAN needs a new
mediator. Because of this crisis the
trade of ASEAN is in danger. Also the tourists are not visiting this temple
due to which revenue is not generated.
