From Shiv Shakti to the Stars: India Celebrates Its Third National Space Day

August 23, 2026 was celebrated in India as the country’s third National Space Day to mark three years since the spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 performed a spectacular soft landing near the south polar region of the moon. This is because it is on this day that India recorded one of its landmark space achievements by landing the Vikram spacecraft on the surface of the moon and deploying the Pragyan rover. The landing site was named Shiv Shakti point, while August 23 was named National Space Day.

There are several reasons why the day is more than just another successful space mission. One of them is that it is symbolic of India’s growing belief in scientific and technological innovations.

486.1) The Moment That Changed India’s Space Story

Chandrayaan-3 landed on the surface of the Moon on August 23, 2023. The feat saw India becoming the first country to land on the southern polar region of the Moon and the fourth country to achieve a successful soft landing on the Moon. Once Chandrayaan-3 landed, the Pragyan rover started analyzing the surface of the Moon and collecting information for science.

The landing site on the surface of the Moon was designated as the Shiv Shakti Point, which is a representation of power and success. This name has come to represent India’s aspirations on the Moon and its resolve to pursue science.

The mission was especially important because it followed failures that occurred with Chandrayaan-2. India’s scientists and engineers did not let failures become an end but took the experience and used it to improve the mission.

National Space Day has now come to be a platform where people can learn about the significance of space technologies for society. The Indian space programme does not end in research labs and launch sites anymore, since there are now many satellites and space technologies that help in communications, navigation, meteorology, farming, disaster management, and remote sensing.

Moreover, the Indian government and research centers have taken this day as a chance to conduct activities like exhibitions, lectures, quizzing events, and educational programmes among others. For instance, during the year 2026, the Goa Science Centre conducted a one-month exhibition, which had highlights like Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, Gaganyaan, Vikram Lander, and Pragyan Rover.

Third National Space Day comes at a point where India’s space program is poised to move into more daring territories. India has shown capability in space docking, human space flight technology, earth observation, and advanced launchers. India has also gone on to expand its cooperation with other countries as well as involvement of the private sector in the space industry.

The accomplishment of Chandrayaan-3 is therefore not just a memory from 2023, but the starting point for even greater aspirations for India. Among India’s plans include Gaganyaan human space flight program, national space station, and finally moon missions.
