India is on the path of launching one of the grandest ventures of its space mission: Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS), which is a planned Indian orbital space station that would change India from a space faring country to a permanent inhabitant of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The decision of the Indian government to approve the building of the first module of this station marks a significant step of the country in moving towards the completion of the space station by 2035.
Bharatiya Antariksha Station would be a modular space station that would be developed gradually. As against the idea of building the complete station at one time, India would launch various modules of the station into LEO and build the station module by module. In this way, India would utilize the growing capacity of its launch vehicle and gain the knowledge necessary to sustain humans in space.
This station has everything to do with India’s aspirations regarding its involvement in space exploration. Gaganyaan, a program designed to show the ability of India to launch astronauts into space and bring them back safely, can serve as an excellent platform for sending astronauts to the BAS in the future. It will allow astronauts to perform experiments in space, observe the Earth, test new technology, and find out how people behave under zero gravity.
Research capabilities are tremendous. The presence of India in space can give researchers the opportunity to conduct studies in many fields, including biology, medicine, materials science, astronomy and Earth observation. The microgravity conditions provide the perfect environment for conducting studies that can not be done on Earth because of the conditions. Long-term repetitive experiments will help in getting information about further space missions.
Apart from its scientific relevance, the BAS project assumes strategic and technological importance. In order to develop and operate a space station, one needs experience in creating life-supporting systems, conducting orbital rendezvous and docking operations, using robotics, producing energy, communication, and maintenance of spacecrafts. The acquisition of these technologies domestically will be beneficial for India's hi-tech industry development and increase involvement of universities, research institutes and private space companies.
The proposed project is also an important step forward for India's space program. For many years, Indian space initiatives were concentrated on satellites, space rockets and their applications including communications, navigation, meteorology and remote sensing.
It is indeed a very ambitious timeline. The first module is likely to be followed by other modules, along with supporting missions to form an orbital station which would be completed sometime around 2035. In order to meet this target, it is clear that continuous funding, dependable heavy-lift rocket launch capabilities, manned spacecraft along with astronaut training programs are necessary.
Therefore, Bharatiya Antariksha Station is not just a space lab but it reflects India’s aspirations in the modern age of space research. In a world where all countries have shifted their focus towards the sky, this Indian orbital station will prove to be a platform for India to explore and experiment further.
Thus, from satellite launches to construction of a home in orbit, India is venturing into an entirely new domain. This Bharatiya Antariksha Station might prove to be a turning point for India in its endeavors towards exploring the skies.
