From 365 Needles to Just 52: Novo Nordisk’s Once-Weekly Insulin Could Transform Diabetes Care in India

It was indeed a remarkable moment in the history of diabetes management when Awiqli (insulin icodec) was launched in India by Novo Nordisk as the first-ever once-weekly basal insulin in the treatment of adults with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It may help cut down the frequency of injections of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes from 365 per year to 52, and therefore be one of the greatest advances in insulin-based treatments in decades.


Insulin treatment means a lot for millions of diabetic patients because it entails much more than mere consumption of an important drug for them—there is a painful and exhausting routine that one must observe every day. The new development will have a significant effect on the quality of lives of the patients. Reduced frequency of injections will lead to reduced treatment fatigue, more convenience and increased adherence to the prescribed insulin regime. Increased adherence to the insulin regimes leads to good glucose management and reduces the risk of developing any other complications associated with diabetes including heart diseases, kidney damage, nerve injury and visual impairment. Despite the fact that Awiqli is not the cure of diabetes, it is considered to be a significant advancement in addressing the major barrier associated with insulin treatment.

It should be noted that the product has been introduced by Novo Nordisk in a competitive way in the Indian market. As per the company, the product will come in two prefilled pen versions and will be priced competitively to existing daily basal insulin treatments. It is expected that the product will be accessible for the patients from India soon after its introduction.

The fact that there is now a once-weekly insulin will provide more choices for doctors in providing treatment for patients with diabetes. It is, however, worth noting that according to health experts, Awiqli is a prescription drug and therefore it should only be started and monitored by licensed health practitioners. It is important to ensure that blood glucose tests are regularly performed and that medical professionals provide directions concerning dosage and lifestyle issues.

The launch of Awiqli is part of a new trend of making patient-focused innovations in the management of chronic illnesses. With most drug manufacturers concentrating on making treatments convenient and effective, such drugs may come to revolutionize the standards of care.

From Lab Bench to Life: Indian Scientists Build Revolutionary 'Placenta-on-a-Chip' to Transform Maternal and Fetal Healthcare

Making great progress towards enhancing research in maternal and fetal health, a team of scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute for Research in Work and Health (ICMR-NIRWoH) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has been able to develop an indigenously made "placenta-on-a-chip" system. This state-of-the-art technology provides a model that mimics the structure and functionality of the human placenta and allows researchers to explore pregnancy-related processes using an ethical, economical, and accurate approach that does not involve much animal experimentation or use of human tissues.


Placenta is one of the key organs that is created during pregnancy. Being a channel between the mother and the fetus, it is responsible for the transfer of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products as well as providing protection from harmful influences. However, research in this area has always been complicated by the lack of access to healthy placentas and ethical limitations of such experiments.

However, the new placenta-on-a-chip overcomes all the above-mentioned challenges through creation of a laboratory micro-environment similar to the natural one for this tissue. The device created on the basis of microfludic technologies allows creating an environment similar to the physiologic one of maternal and fetal sides to examine the processes of interaction and communication between the cells and the reaction to various factors in real time.

Unlike the traditional methods of research based on the use of conventional laboratory models, the technology of organ-on-a-chip provides researchers with opportunities to create realistic conditions in miniature devices through combining cells with the micro-engineered channels simulating blood flow and other physiological conditions. Thus, it is possible to achieve an extremely realistic reproduction of the functional activities of placenta and increase the reliability of experimental findings.

The greatest advantage of the indigenous platform is the opportunity it provides to conduct more precise research of disorders related to pregnancy. Preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, intrauterine growth restriction, placental insufficiency, preterm birth – these and other pregnancy-related diseases remain a considerable cause of mortality and morbidity among women and infants all over the world.

Further, it creates a potential for the innovation to contribute towards drug discovery and testing. It was difficult to determine the ability of drugs, pollutants, nanoparticles, and other harmful substances to pass the placental barrier and hence cause harm to the unborn child. With the help of the innovation, the researchers will be able to study how the different chemicals move from the mother to the child, which will help in developing drugs that can safely be used during pregnancy.

One of the key points of significance in terms of this accomplishment is the contribution made by India in the area of advanced biomedical engineering and translational medicine. India Reactivates AIR SUVIDHA 2.0: Mandatory Health Screening Returns for Travellers from Ebola-Affected Nations

In a notable effort towards bolstering the border health security of India, the Government of India has activated the AIR SUVIDHA 2.0 portal for all passengers who arrive from and transit through Ebola-affected countries. In line with the current efforts of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DIAL and DGHS, AIR SUVIDHA 2.0 is a digitized and improved version of the platform that seeks to improve public health surveillance along with providing a hassle-free experience to the travellers. This comes in the wake of increasing global concerns regarding the ongoing Ebola outbreak in some parts of Africa after the declaration by WHO that the outbreak constitutes Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).


AIR SUVIDHA 2.0 substitutes the previous paper health declaration process with a completely digitized and contactless process. In accordance with new guidelines, passengers who travel from and transit through Ebola-affected countries have to fill an online Self Declaration Form (SDF). They are required to provide details regarding their 21-day travel history, possible exposures and symptoms of the disease if any. It is recommended that passengers declare the information up to 24 hours prior to their arrival, preferably during web check-in.

The new portal has been developed to enable the timely coordination between different government departments. The information provided by the travellers is transferred securely to Airport Health Officers, the Bureau of Immigration, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and the State Surveillance Officers. This system allows the identification of high-risk travellers in a timely manner and helps to take the relevant steps regarding their medical examination and quarantine without any inconvenience to other travellers.

It is the preventive measure undertaken by India to ensure that no infections enter the country via air travel. Even though India does not have any reported case of Ebola, health experts consider that the best way to prevent an outbreak is early detection of the disease at international points of entry. With the growing number of international flights, digital health surveillance tools like AIR SUVIDHA 2.0 help to monitor the travellers efficiently.

The initial deployment of the Air Suvidha portal came amid the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to ease the process of filling out health declarations and contact tracing for foreign travelers. The second deployment of the Air Suvidha portal amidst the Ebola virus outbreak proves how the digital infrastructure created during one health emergency can serve well in solving another in the future. Moreover, the second iteration of the service makes travel more convenient through the absence of any paperwork.

It is recommended that travelers fill in the Self-Declaration Form accurately. On arrival at the airport, one may be required to present either a printed or digital confirmation of the form filled in at the International Travel Health Desk or the immigration counter.

In light of the developing scenario of Ebola for the global health community, the revamp of AIR SUVIDHA 2.0 in India highlights how the country is making efforts to ensure that there is no danger posed to the public health status in the country while at the same time not affecting international movements. With the use of technology and preventive surveillance measures, the government ensures that the risk of any diseases being imported into the country is minimized.

Kasa Kay? महाराष्ट्राचा आरोग्य मंत्र: Building a Healthier Rural Future

A notable effort by the Government of Maharashtra in enhancing the health standards in villages is the recent initiation of the “Kasa Kay?” campaign for rural health awareness. The phrase “Kasa Kay?” means “How are you?” in the Marathi language. This particular health awareness campaign has taken more than just meaning, becoming a people-centric movement with a focus on the prevention of diseases and promotion of nutrition in the villages.


There are numerous health problems in rural communities as a result of lack of health facilities, awareness, poor sanitation, and malnutrition. Most cases of severe illnesses, which lead to fatalities, could have been easily prevented by creating awareness and encouraging healthy practices. Through the “Kasa Kay?” initiative, there will be an emphasis on the prevention of disease among other aspects.

AIIMS Delhi Leads the Way in Robotic Surgical Training in India

By creating cutting-edge robotic surgical training programs, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India's top medical school, has made a groundbreaking advancement in surgical education and greatly increased the nation's capability for high-precision surgical methods.



281.1) Transforming Surgical Education with Robotics

With the installation of cutting-edge robotic devices at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) Facility, AIIMS has become a leader in robotic-assisted surgical training. The recent launch of the da Vinci Surgical Robot, a well-known robotic platform for minimally invasive treatments, marked a significant turning point. With this development, AIIMS is now the first government medical college in India to provide specialised training on the da Vinci system, allowing practitioners and trainees to get organised, practical surgical education.

AIIMS has eliminated the need for Indian surgeons to pursue robotic surgical education overseas by providing this training domestically, hence reducing time, expense, and logistical obstacles. Wider adoption of robotic procedures is anticipated as a result of this advancement, which will increase access to advanced surgical capabilities among the nation's healthcare personnel.

Additionally, the robotic surgery program at AIIMS includes both clinical application and training. The Department of surgery Disciplines at AIIMS Delhi has completed more than 1,000 robotic surgeries in less than a year, including kidney transplants, endocrine surgery cases, cancer resections, and reconstructions of the abdominal wall. These results show the practical use of robotic approaches in patient care as well as their high-end capacity.

Bringing Healthcare to the Heart of Villages: Launch of the Chief Minister’s Mobile Operation Theatre in Nagaland

The Government of Nagaland has introduced the Chief Minister's Mobile Operation Theatre (CM-MOT), a ground-breaking project intended to provide cutting-edge surgical and medical services directly to underprivileged communities throughout the state, in a major step towards revolutionising the delivery of healthcare in rural areas.



On January 26, 2025, the Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, formally opened the CM-MOT at the Secretariat Plaza in Kohima on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day. Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio and other high-ranking officials were present.

This initiative's main objective is to provide comprehensive surgical care and diagnostic services to rural and remote populations that have historically faced major obstacles to receiving high-quality healthcare, such as difficult terrain, a lack of transportation infrastructure, and the high cost of travelling to urban hospitals.

The mobile unit has state-of-the-art amenities, including a fully operational surgical theatre that can do minimally invasive and keyhole procedures. Additionally, it contains portable diagnostic tools that allow physicians to offer a variety of services immediately, including ultrasound, X-ray, endoscopy, and blood testing equipment.

The unit travels with a committed medical team from Kohimas Hospital, assisted by experts from both public and private healthcare facilities. The beneficiaries receive free surgical procedures, dental care, general consultations, and pre- and post-operative care from this team.

CM-MOT has already achieved significant progress throughout the northeastern state since its inception. The team conducted hundreds of surgeries, dental procedures, and outpatient consultations in dozens of rural places in 2025 and early 2026, including Aboi in Mon district, Dhansiripar in Chümoukedima, Longleng, and Wokha.

There has been a significant impact: villagers who did not previously have access to necessary medical care have now received life-saving treatments without having to deal with the financial and practical difficulties of long-distance travel. Narratives from field camps demonstrate not only therapeutic progress but also the restoration of patients' and their families' dignity and optimism.

The CM-MOT is praised by community leaders and healthcare professionals as a model for inclusive and equitable healthcare delivery, bridging the gap between rural health demands and urban medical infrastructure. The government of Nagaland hopes to lessen healthcare inequities and enhance general well-being throughout the state by integrating cutting-edge medical services into the communities that most need them.

In addition to being a symbol of creative governance, the mobile theatre serves as a ray of hope for rural communities that have long yearned for dependable and easily accessible surgical care.
