The Indian government has made a significant move towards improving its defence healthcare system by virtually launching the first-ever Department of Military Medicine in India's Command Hospital, Lucknow, by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on July 29, 2026. The establishment of this department demonstrates the country's increasing efforts in equipping its defence forces with state-of-the-art medical knowledge and skills, as well as conducting research and innovation in military healthcare.

Military medicine is a special medical practice that goes beyond the basic principles of medicine. It deals with preventing, diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating illnesses and injuries suffered by military personnel in various operating environments. From fighting at great altitudes in the Himalayas to serving in the Indian Ocean and providing aid in natural calamities, military doctors are trained to offer essential medical services in the most challenging conditions.

The creation of the Department of Military Medicine represents an important milestone in the process of becoming independent and progressive with regard to military healthcare in India. With the formation of such a department, a separate forum for learning and research related to clinical medicine, healthcare on the battlefield, and defense research will come into existence.
