Bengaluru, September 2026: The indigenous aerospace programme of India made another notable achievement in terms of handing over newly developed Tejas twin-seat trainer and HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force. The ceremony took place at Bengaluru on September 18, and this reflects how domestic platforms are increasingly contributing to India’s military aviation domain.
In this ceremony, two LCA Tejas Final Operational Clearance (FOC) twin-seat trainers and three HTT-40 basic trainers were handed over to the IAF by HAL. The ceremony was graced by Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister of India, and K. Rammohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister of India.
512.1) Tejas Trainers: Preparing Pilots for Frontline Fighters
The two-seater Tejas trainer will facilitate the process of advanced flight training without compromising the basic elements of the combat Tejas aircraft. The task is especially important in view of preparing pilots for frontline fighter duty.
The delivery of the two aircraft in September completes the delivery of the twin-seat trainer aircraft under the FOC agreement. As a result, the IAF now has extra capability for training pilots on an aircraft that is quite similar to the single-seater Tejas aircraft.
At the same time, the Tejas project can be viewed as one of the main projects of India aimed at developing national expertise in the field of fighter aircraft design and manufacturing.
512.2) HTT-40: Building the Foundation
Whereas Tejas is used by trainers at the advanced phase of fighter-pilot training, the Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) caters for the basic phases of military pilot training.
The HTT-40 is a locally designed and developed turboprop trainer that has a state-of-the-art cockpit and avionics fit. It is capable of performing aerobatic maneuvers, flying instruments, navigation, night flying and formation flying. This means that it is ideal for imparting basic flying skills prior to advancing to more complex flying machines.
HAL has signed a contract to provide 70 HTT-40 trainers to the Defence Ministry. In September, the handover was thus the start of the deliveries of the program and not the end of the program.
It has even been named “Ankur” to reflect its status as the first aircraft in the aviation career of a military pilot.
512.3) One Training Pipeline, Two Indigenous Platforms
The induction of both Tejas trainers and HTT-40s is important as these planes cater to different aspects of the training process in the Indian Air Force. HTT-40 caters to basic training whereas the twin-seater Tejas offers advanced training related to frontline fighter aircraft. Both together highlight how locally made planes can be useful at various stages of pilot training.
This is important from the perspective of the manufacturing industry as well in India. As per the Ministry of Defence, the induction of these planes is part of the larger efforts of the country to build its capabilities in indigenous design, development, and manufacture.
512.4) A Broader Aerospace Milestone
Apart from military trainers, the September 18 event also featured other deliveries by HAL. Specifically, HAL delivered four Dhruv Next Generation helicopters to Pawan Hans Limited, representing another step towards India’s own civilian aviation program.
Combining all the aforementioned deliveries, it is evident that HAL’s production of planes for the Indian air force has been diversifying from basic trainer aircraft to advanced fighters and even helicopters.
From the perspective of the Indian air force, the delivery of Tejas trainer and HTT-40 aircraft will help reinforce their own increasingly indigenously-oriented training system. From the perspective of India’s aerospace industry, the achievement signifies another step from designing aircraft within the country to manufacturing them in large numbers.
