During an era where an undetermined number is capable of interrupting a vital business meeting, a family gathering, or even disrupt your sleep at night, spam phone calls and messages have turned into more than just a small annoyance. In order to deal with the ever-growing problem of Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC), TRAI has stepped up its fight against spam using the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
511.1) A New Era of Anti-Spam Regulation
Anti-spam regulations by TRAI aim at safeguarding telecom users from unnecessary promotional calls and messages. In the context of this regulatory system, telecom companies are supposed to recognize and counter the practices of those entities which make use of telecommunication systems for business communications without adhering to any set guidelines.
There is an increasing trend in moving from reacting to spam reports submitted by users who have received such calls or messages to identifying suspicious behavior beforehand. Using AI and analytical tools can help in detecting the peculiar patterns of calling or excessive messaging that can be linked to spam.
This is one of the major changes in the approach of Indian authorities towards telecom-based consumer protection in that technology can be used instead of reporting from individual users.
511.2) How AI Can Detect Spam?
With the use of artificial intelligence, there is an ability to analyze large amounts of information about telecom and find certain patterns, which could be hard to notice otherwise. For example, AI will recognize numbers with a sudden influx of call attempts and/or text messages, especially when the behavior of such numbers is similar to those previously recognized as spam numbers.
The use of artificial intelligence may also help classify calls, and distinguish the calls and messages which should be considered as spam from the legitimate business ones.
Still, the use of artificial intelligence does not necessarily mean that each number automatically marked as spam is a spam one. In addition to AI, the human factor and regulation procedures should be used to determine the nature of calls and/or messages.
511.3) Stricter Accountability for Telecom Users
TRAI’s policy, on the other hand, puts more focus on accountability within the telecom network. The business entities and telemarketing firms making commercial calls have to ensure that all necessary registration and communication rules are followed.
This means that commercial communication must be delivered to consumers via credible channels, not via indiscriminate mass calls or messages.
In this case, consumers will benefit from stringent compliance measures in the form of receiving less annoying calls, protection against fraudulent calls and having better control over their telephone numbers.
511.4) What This Means for Consumers?
This tightening of anti-spam rules is especially noteworthy because spam now shares many commonalities with financial scams and impersonations. While an unsolicited promotional communication can be annoying, a deceptive phone call appearing to come from a bank, insurance company, or government entity can do significant damage to your finances.
But people should not be complacent. Rules can’t stop every scam phone call or spam message. Individuals should be careful about giving out OTPs, passwords, PINs, or financial information with people they don’t know.
511.5) Conclusion
Increasingly relying on AI in TRAI indicates a shift in the approach to regulating telecom in India. The immense volume of information generated by the telecommunications network in India requires automated solutions to recognize misuse.
The difficulty would be ensuring efficient spam detection and proper regulation of legitimate business communications, as well as taking into account such factors as transparency of enforcement actions, technological accuracy, and privacy concerns.
In summary, one can conclude that the message of the new TRAI regime is obvious: India moves from complaint-based approach in combating telecom spam to technologically-driven enforcement actions. With the involvement of AI in combat against spam, a familiar sound of an unwanted phone call will start ringing a bell not for consumers but for the telecom network itself.
