BRICS Summit 2026 has gathered some of the world's leading emerging economies in New Delhi and made the Indian capital one of the prominent hubs of international diplomacy. Taking place on September 12-13, 2026 as India assumes chairmanship, the 18th BRICS Summit has been concentrated on improving strategic cooperation and finding solutions to some of the most urgent problems of the world, both economic, political and developmental.
India has taken charge of the summit based on the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." This theme has shown the aspirations of New Delhi to turn BRICS into an applied, inclusive organization that deals with issues of direct relevance for people and developing economies. It was the fourth time that India chaired BRICS, which also marked its 20th anniversary.
506.1) A Powerful Gathering of Global Leaders
The BRICS summit was attended by leaders from the expanded BRICS group such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa amongst others. There are a total of 11 members within the expanded BRICS group, making up about half of the world’s population and economy.
The participation of different leaders at the conference made the summit not only economically but also politically important. With wars going on in Ukraine and West Asia and international business being hampered due to the same, BRICS became a forum for the Global South countries to discuss their issues.
506.2) India’s Push for Practical Cooperation
In the case of India, the focus during their chairmanship was on areas like food and energy security, health care, agriculture, technology, disaster resiliency, trade, and sustainable development. The yearlong chairmanship involved hundreds of interactions in various Indian cities, and formed the foundation for the Leaders Summit.
Technology became one more field for cooperation. Issues related to artificial intelligence, digital technologies, innovation and resilient supply chains showed how the priorities of the emerging economies have been changing. China also suggested initiatives regarding increased cooperation within the BRICS on artificial intelligence, services and economic development.
506.3) Diplomacy Beyond the Conference Hall
Among some of the most notable events were those that occurred off the sidelines. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi engaged in a discussion with the Chinese President Xi Jinping, with both parties showing keen interest in boosting their relationship, economy, and peaceful coexistence at their disputed borders. Xi’s visit to India marked a seven-year gap since his last visit, making it an event of great diplomatic importance.
The Indian Prime Minister also engaged in talks with the Russian President Vladimir Putin on cooperation in matters such as energy, trade, defense, outer space, and skill mobility among others.
506.4) A Stronger Voice for the Global South
It appears that the main lesson learned at the summit held in 2026 lies in the increasing ambitions of BRICS to create a platform for the more powerful representation of emerging nations within the global context. The BRICS leaders have voiced their support for increased representation of the Global South in international bodies.
The New Delhi Declaration strengthened the commitments to cooperation in politics and security, economy and finance, as well as in culture and people-to-people contacts. Moreover, resilience, innovation and sustainable development were recognized as the key elements on which future cooperation will be based.
With the end of the summit, New Delhi was not only the hosting city but also the diplomatic intersection of a shifting global order. It has become clear that BRICS 2026 has shown that the cooperation of emerging countries has become increasingly significant.
