A Fish Above the Clouds: Rare Himalayan Species Recorded in Arunachal Pradesh

A fascinating discovery from the freshwater biodiversity of India has been made in the rugged and lofty peaks of Arunachal Pradesh. Schizopygopsis waddellii, a rare cold water freshwater fish from the family Cyprinidae, has been spotted in Pangkang Teng Tso Lake in the Tawang district of India. This discovery, made in September 2026, is the first instance of the rare fish being recorded in the country and provides an insight into the largely undocumented biodiversity of the waters of Eastern Himalayas.

Pangkang Teng Tso is a natural high altitude lake located at a height of 12,800 feet above sea level in Tawang near the border of India and China. It is a unique lake owing to its harsh surroundings comprising of cold water and high altitude along with difficult climatic conditions, making it a unique place for survival of certain species of fish that thrive in such harsh conditions.

505.1) A fish built for extreme environments

The fish is native to the cold freshwater regions of the Tibetan and Chinese plateaus. Until now, it was found only in high altitude waterbodies such as Yamdrok (Yamdok) Lake, located in Tibet. Thus, its presence in Tawang indicates an expansion in its geographical distribution.

Since the fish belongs to the family of Cyprinidae, it is a relative of carps and minnows. Yet, being one of the specialized Himalayan fishes, it has adapted to the harsh environmental conditions typical of high altitude aquatic regions. These conditions may include very low temperatures and lack of biological productivity and food availability.

505.2) How was the species identified?

This discovery included participation by researchers at the ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-CICFR), Bhimtal, along with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Shar-Tso Committee of Tawang. Ten specimens were obtained from Pangkang Teng Tso in July 2026.

The scientists employed the approach of integrative taxonomy involving a careful study of both the morphological features of the fish as well as molecular analysis. More specifically, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence analysis was used to identify the species. Morphology combined with genetic analysis proves more effective compared to just using the physical features of closely related Himalayan species.

505.3) Why this discovery matters?

The sighting not only adds to the list of fish found in India but also goes beyond just doing so. Firstly, it adds to the list of the species record in India's freshwater fishes. Secondly, it increases the knowledge about the range of the species and biological linkages between the high-altitude freshwater ecosystems in the Himalayas and Tibet.

In addition, the report draws attention to the ecological significance of the lakes of Arunachal Pradesh. Most of these lakes are inaccessible and relatively unexplored due to their remoteness. The occurrence of a species that was earlier found on the Tibetan Plateau shows that further explorations in such lakes may lead to the discovery of more species or even populations within India. There has been a call made by scientists for conducting proper surveys of the high-altitude lakes in the area.

505.4) A reminder from the high Himalayas

This finding is, at the end of the day, a reminder that there is much more to the biodiversity history of India than is known. The existence of a fish found in an isolated lake that is almost 13,000 feet above sea level has increased knowledge about the country's natural legacy.

For the sake of scientists and conservationists alike, it is important to note that saving high-altitude lakes from environmental destruction is not just about conserving beautiful scenery. It is about saving ecosystems and possibly unique species that do not exist anywhere else in India.
