Every month, an article on microplastics is published in the renowned newspaper of the world. The purpose of that article is to make people but these articles are unable to spread awareness very properly around the world. Indonesia, a country full of archipelagos, has seen one of the worst situations regarding microplastics which is popularly called plastic rain. In this phenomenon, the rainwater carries microplastics flying in the environment to the land. This is normal in mostly developing nations due to improper management of plastic waste which is about microplastic particles per square meter per day. But ,in the rainfall of Jakarta, the rate was much higher than expected. It was about 15 microplastics particles per square meter per day.
This research was done by the National
Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia and its final report came on
17th October 2025. These microplastics contained synthetic fibres from
clothing, polymers from tyres, small pieces of plastics that broke down from
the combustion and degradation of various substances. In the research, it was
said that the higher the rainfall the more microplastics are cleaned from the
air we breathe everyday. They also found microplastics in deep sea barnacles
at the depth of 200 meters in Northern Maluku, Southwestern Philippines sea,
likely from abandoned fishing gear.
In 2024, research was done jointly by
Indonesia and China. This research showed that microplastics were found within
5 meters below the surface in water surrounding the archipelago, from north java and north sulawesi to
maluku sea.
A researcher from Japan said that
microplastics act as MAGNET for air
pollutants and toxic additive chemicals that make up a plastic fibre. Japanese
researchers also said that there is a cocktail effect of all existing
pollutants that make it scary. If people inhale or come into contact with
microplastics in rainwater, they also inhale the chemical in them.
In the food of Indonesia, microplastics
are found in very large amounts. That's why Indonesia ranks 1st among 109
nations in uptaking microplastics, Malaysia as 2nd country. In
Indonesia, most microplastics come from
sea food. This is happening because of improper management of plastic waste .
The inhalation of microplastics can be reduced by using high quality masks.
But these masks can increase the amount of microplastics when thrown at dumping
sites.
The microplastics are also increasing in
the environment of Bharat. We should aware of the upcoming problem so that our
future generation will become safe.
