Himalaya Diwas 2026: When the Water Tower of Asia Begins to Run Dry

Being celebrated on September 9, 2026, Himalaya Diwas assumes an especially significant meaning for the world's most vital mountain ecosystem. While being a unique natural phenomenon, the Himalayas are also a huge natural water reservoir. Its glaciers and seasonal snowfalls nourish numerous river systems, agricultural and hydroelectric activities and are a source of livelihood for many people in South Asia. This year, the emphasis of Himalaya Diwas will be made on a warning signal, which cannot be disregarded anymore: melting glaciers and reduced snow cover pose a threat to water security.



The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) area is the source of numerous river basins such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins. Combined with other Himalayan rivers, they meet the water demands of almost two billion people. Glaciers and snow serve as natural reservoirs of meltwater.


503.1) A Cryosphere Under Pressure

The signals in 2026 are worrying indeed. According to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), snow cover in the Hindu Kush Himalaya was 27.8% lower than the long-term average, the fourth successive year of below-normal snow persistence. Below-normal snow persistence was observed in ten out of the twelve major river basins of the region.

There are notable changes in the glaciers in India too. Reports by the government suggest that there are accelerated and non-uniform losses in the mass of glaciers in the Himalayas, and retreat rates vary from one river basin to another. The mean retreat rate is about 15 metres annually. Some of the glaciers in the Brahmaputra river basin are showing much higher average retreat rates.

The effects are paradoxical. On one hand, increased melting leads to increased runoff, and therefore, flash floods, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). However, on the other hand, due to lack of ice stores, the problem is reverse in the long run: decreased availability of water in dry seasons. The Food and Agriculture Organization warns about increasing problems regarding water, food and livelihood security.


503.2) From Glacial Loss to Water Insecurity

The northern river basins will not react in the same way to the climatic change. The Indus is heavily dependent on the melting of snow and glaciers, while Ganga and Brahmaputra get a greater share from monsoon rains. Yet, changes in the melting regime of snow and ice can lead to imbalances in all three river basins.

In India, this is not the only problem as its agriculture, drinking water, hydro power and groundwater depend on the flow regime of the Himalayan rivers. Lack of snow in storage can affect the seasonality of run-off leading to periods of excess water supply and water shortage at peak use time.

Modern research has also shown that the entire cryosphere of the Himalayas, including decrease in snow cover and thawing of permafrost is under threat.


503.3) Himalaya Diwas: A Call for Action

Thus, Himalaya Diwas 2026 needs to go beyond being an event of mere celebration. Instead, it must remind us that safeguarding the Himalayas is integral to safeguarding India’s water future.

Improvements in glacier and snow monitoring, remote sensing, early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, and cross-boundary cooperation will be crucial. Effective water resource management will go hand-in-hand with these initiatives, especially for agriculture and hydroelectricity.

The Himalayan region is often referred to as the “Water Tower of Asia.” And when we think about it in 2026, the message becomes very clear. Water towers can hold huge amounts of water but once its capacity becomes low, the downstream areas face the brunt of this.

Melting Heights: The Alarming Decline of Snow in the Hindu Kush Himalaya

Spanning eight countries and containing some of the highest peaks on Earth, the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) has often been dubbed the “Third Pole” due to its abundant deposits of ice and snow. However, according to a recent report published by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, there have been serious worries about snow persistence – one of the most significant climatic features of the region – dropping by a staggering 27%.


The term snow persistence implies the duration of the snow cover through the entire year. Snow persistence plays an important role in the regulation of water flows of such major rivers as the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra. A reduction in snow persistence implies that the process of snow melting occurs much faster than usual. This trend may affect numerous spheres of life in South Asia, from agriculture to the operation of hydroelectric power plants.

According to the ICIMOD report, the reduction is mainly attributed to global warming caused by climate change. Warming up of winter causes a decrease in precipitation of snow. Moreover, warming of spring accelerates melting process leading to a reduction in the period snow covers the ground. Such reductions not only affect water storage in the mountains but also alter the river's flow causing floods and drought.

Firstly, water shortage is one of the impacts. It should be noted that more than two billion people rely directly and indirectly on water of the rivers nourished by HKH snow and glacier melt. Agriculture in northern India, Nepal, and Pakistan depends on the regular supply of water to maintain agricultural production. Therefore, a reduction in snow cover means an increase in water shortages during the growing season.

Moreover, another impact of the reduction is environmental impact. Mountain environments are very sensitive to slight alterations in climatic parameters. Snow and temperature have a significant impact on the environment in mountain regions. Plants and animals inhabiting the HKH are accustomed to certain climatic conditions. Changes in climatic factors force plants to migrate.

Moreover, one must note that there is a heightened risk associated with natural disasters as well. Fast melting may result in the rapid rise in the discharge levels, resulting in floods and landslides. In addition, insufficient long-term accumulation will be a source of water shortages during the dry period. All of these factors make the situation very challenging.

Thus, the information provided in the ICIMOD report stresses the significance of taking action in order to address this problem. Firstly, one must realize that even though the HKH region is geographically located quite remotely, its future is directly dependent on the climate situation throughout the world. It is important to reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions and slow down the process of warming in order to preserve as much snow and ice in the region as possible. Secondly, adaptation measures are required in order to mitigate the adverse effects.

Lastly, one must note that regional cooperation plays an important role in solving the issue. Due to the fact that the HKH region encompasses several countries, cooperation and collaboration are highly essential.

Even in the face of such depressing figures, there is an opening for education and action in the report. With a 27% decrease, the report highlights that climate change is not a phenomenon of the future but one that has already begun altering crucial ecological systems around the world. The decisions that we make today, as a global and local community, will be the ones that will decide whether the HKH will continue sustaining life or become a testament to its destruction.

The heights where the Hindu Kush Himalaya are melting have a story to tell—and it's time that we listen to it.
