As a path-breaking initiative that aims at modernizing the agricultural system and also encourage women innovations, the Tamil Nadu Government has launched the 'Vetri Vaanmagal' drone training programme in the 2026-27 Agriculture Budget of the State. This program is indeed a great effort taken by the state towards the modernization of agriculture as it incorporates the use of technology in the agricultural process while providing employment to women in rural areas.
The initiative was announced by Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister R. Vinoth, who mentioned that the use of drones in changing the agricultural system is increasing. As per the program, 500 candidates including 100 women would get professional training on the use of drones in agriculture. Along with this, the participants would be helped in getting their drone pilot license from the Remote Pilot Training Organization of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). A sum of ₹1.50 crore has been allocated for this purpose.
In order to ensure that the training results in practical implementation, the government has taken another step forward and allocated ₹2.50 crore for the provision of agricultural drones at a 50% subsidy to 50 trained women. Such monetary support is anticipated to motivate women to utilize the drones for agriculture and become proficient service providers in their communities.
Agricultural drones have proven themselves to be highly efficient instruments for precision agriculture. Drones can be effectively used for the application of fertilizers and pesticides, crop monitoring, field monitoring, land mapping, and data gathering for making informed decisions. As compared to traditional agriculture, the use of drones ensures significant savings of time and labor, reduces chemical losses and increases the accuracy of farm operations. For a state facing labor shortages during its agricultural seasons, drone technology provides a promising solution.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Vetri Vaanmagal initiative is its focus on empowering women. The programme is consistent with the United Nations designation of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer owing to the critical role played by women in contributing towards food security and agriculture development around the world. Through training women in advanced technological skills, Tamil Nadu hopes to eliminate the gender divide in agricultural mechanization whilst opening new business opportunities.
The project is also consistent with the state government’s wider vision of empowering women as agents of rural development. In addition to training them in drones, the Agricultural Budget features provisions such as provision of priority for women in agricultural mechanization programs, increased subsidies for solar dryers, increased involvement of women self-help groups in machinery hiring centers, and cultivation of mushrooms and microgreens. These projects ensure that women are not only beneficiaries but key players in agricultural development.
Beyond its short-term gains, the Vetri Vaanmagal scheme also offers long-term investments towards the future of Indian agriculture. With climate change, scarcity of resources and shortage of labor affecting the agriculture sector in India, the use of precision technologies such as drones will increase significantly. Training a new batch of certified drone operators would not only increase farm efficiency, but it will help bring down costs, as well as promoting smart farming practices.
The implementation of the Vetri Vaanmagal scheme is a shining example of what technological innovation and inclusive policymaking can achieve in enhancing agriculture. Empowering women with new age technological skills coupled with financial aid to deploy drone technology has set an exemplary standard of progress that other states should follow. The successful implementation of the project will not only make it a benchmark for modern sustainable agriculture, but it will also create a smart agriculture system in India.
