The development of the AK-203 rifle called 'Sher' marks a huge achievement for India in becoming self-sufficient in the production of military hardware. India has been able to develop the country's first ever indigenous AK-203 assault rifle and test fire it successfully from the Korwa ordnance factory located in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The country’s development of such a rifle is considered a significant step in making India a military power that builds complex military hardware.
The development of the AK-203 'Sher' rifle is done by the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL). This company is jointly owned by India and Russia, founded in 2019. The manufacturing of the AK-203 rifles domestically falls under the Make in India initiative. The current development of the AK-203 rifle is of great significance in the aspect of localisation as the components and input materials used in the production of this rifle are totally from the Indian industry.
The AK-203 rifle in itself is one of the latest models of the famous Kalashnikov rifles which uses the 7.62 X 39mm caliber cartridge. The reports reveal that the rifle is capable of producing a firing speed of 700 rounds per minute along with an effective firing range of 800 metres. The modern design and operational features of the rifle are designed in such a way as to make it a better alternative to the old small arms available to the Indian soldiers like the INSAS rifle.
The importance of the Korwa success goes beyond the rifle itself. To manufacture all the parts of the rifle inside India, there will have to be many manufacturers in India who will be able to manufacture the parts according to the very high standards of metallurgy, machining, precise engineering and quality control. According to some reports, an AK-203 has hundreds of parts and manufacturing processes.
Another very important factor in the program is the production capacity. The IRRPL aims to achieve a production capacity where they can produce one rifle per 100 seconds and the plan includes the production of more than six lakh rifles for the armed forces of India. If achieved, it will show that indigenous defence manufacturing can not only manufacture prototypes but also at the production levels necessary for a big military force.
The other next step would be the trials done by the Indian Army. IRRPL is working to make a fully indigenized prototype of the rifle which is going to undergo trials by the Indian Army in September 2026.
In this context, the ‘Sher’ is not just a rifle but the representation of how slowly India’s indigenous capability of manufacturing has evolved. Though the project started as a joint venture between India and Russia, the latest success shows how technology transfers and indigenous learning through the process can be accomplished gradually.
In its relentless effort to realize the dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the true value of the “Sher” may not merely be seen in the production of a rifle completely made in India, but in the building of confidence and competence to build and export complex defense systems. From the shop floor in Korwa, the message is clear; the defense manufacturing plans of India are slowly shifting from assembly to self-reliance.
