Sky-to-Sea Surge: India’s Khagantak-243 and ICGS Ajit Signal a New Defence Push

India’s quest for self-sufficiency in its military equipment has received new impetus through two notable events: the Indian Air Force’s trials of the indigenous Khagantak-243 long-range glide bomb and the delivery of the fast patrol vessel ICGS Ajit to the Indian Coast Guard by Goa Shipyard Limited. These two events together enhance India’s capability to deliver strikes from a stand-off distance in the air and secure its extensive marine approaches at sea.



The trial of Khagantak-243 is a significant step forward in India’s drive towards having an indigenous capability for precision-guided air-to-surface weapons. In this connection, it may be mentioned that the Indian Air Force has stated that the drop trial of the indigenously designed and developed Long Range Glide Bomb was a success in all respects.

Khagantak-243, designed by JSR Dynamics Pvt Ltd based in Nagpur, in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited under a development cum production partnership model, is also a reflection of the increased involvement of the private sector in the production of defence weapons in India. This partnership is important because the design efforts of the start-up company are combined with the production experience of the public-sector defence electronics company.

The Khagantak-243 has been developed to provide the combat aircraft with a safer option to carry out attacks. This weapon allows a combat aircraft to engage the target while flying at a stand-off range, rather than flying directly over the highly protected target area. By means of wings and aerodynamic lift, the glide bomb is guided towards its intended target, while not using the onboard propulsion system unlike the cruise missiles.

This particular setup deserves special mention. Khagantak-243 is armed with a 125 kg Mk-81 general purpose blast fragmentation warhead, and it also employs mid body glide wings and five tail control surfaces. It apparently has a range between 144 and 180 km when released from a height of 12 km at Mach 0.8 speed, which provides the option of attacking the targets while keeping away from the enemy air defence area.

The bomb was tested for the first time from the Su-30MKI aircraft from Pokhran. The planned integration of the bomb into MiG-29K and Mirage-2000 aircraft was mentioned. Integration of such weapons is as important as the development of the weapon itself since a weapon is operational only when it is capable of being launched from the front line aircraft.

On the other hand, the handing over of the ICGS Ajit highlights another equally significant aspect of India’s need for continuous coastal protection. The Goa Shipyard Limited officially handed over the vessel, Yard 1277, to the Indian Coast Guard on 25 August 2026 after its First Reading Ceremony. It is the first out of eight vessels that were built in order to bolster the operational capacity of the Coast Guard.

The ICGS Ajit is likely to be used in missions related to coastal and offshore areas including surveillance, interdiction, law enforcement, search, and rescue operations. Its alleged maximum speed of over 27 knots makes it very mobile as it requires the ability of the patrol vessel to maneuver swiftly in the congested coastal waters.

Also, it is an indicator of the advancement of indigenous shipbuilding capability. It is stated that the ship consists of over 65 percent Indian material, consistent with the overall Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy. Although weapons such as Khagantak-243 aim at reducing the reliance on imported precision weaponry, platforms like ICGS Ajit enhance the locally produced maritime security capabilities of the country.

However, these advancements have distinct uses and targets; yet, their logic is the same. The glide bomb development by the IAF enhances range, precision, and operational flexibility in contested airspaces, while the new patrol vessel of the Coast Guard ensures increased awareness and response capability along the Indian coast.

Hence, the Indian defence modernization process has increasingly started developing in different domains, not only through the production of large platforms but also the local development of weapons, sensors, and other patrolling assets used daily for military purposes.
