Yet another great chapter is written in the history of the heritage of Telangana with the declaration of the Gollala Gudi Temple, located in Palampet, in the Mulugu District, as a Monument of National Importance by the Government of India. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), functioning under the Ministry of Culture, has declared the monument through the notification number S.O. 4802(E) published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on 31st August, 2026.
The Gollala Gudi Temple is situated in the south-west direction from the world-famous Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple. The Gollala Gudi is an important monument in the larger context of the architecture of the Kakatiya period in Palampet. The Ramappa Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021, and other monuments around this site serve as an important source of information for the artistic and architectural splendors of the Kakatiya period.
495.1) A Masterpiece of Kakatiya Architecture
One characteristic of the Gollala Gudi Temple that is quite interesting and impressive is its trikutalaya structure. This means that the temple has three sanctums. There is a mandapa facing towards the eastern side, which is surrounded by three garbhagrihas. The central sanctum has a Shiva lingam inside it.
One thing that really adds to the beauty of the monument is the wonderful stone carving that can be seen in it. It has sculptures carved on its parapet. Hamsas, which look like swans and are actually birds, can be seen on its entablature and doorways. Latticework is another unique characteristic that is evident from the stone work in the temple.
There are two detached shrines in front of the temple building. They have beautiful carvings of dvarapalas in them. The antechambers have wonderful cornices and stone screens carved in them. The temple walls have niches showing deities such as Vishnu, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Mahishasuramardini.
The temple itself is built on a high plinth, which has animal and floral figures carved in it.
495.2) Why National Importance Matters?
This designation goes beyond mere symbolic distinction because, when a monument is declared to have national significance, it becomes protected according to the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. The ASI takes up the responsibility of conserving, maintaining, and managing public access to the monument.
As per officials, the activities involved in conserving the Gollala Gudi monument would include, among other things, repairing the roof, leveling the ground and the restoration of the flooring. This can prove to be useful in dealing with the problems faced by the ancient stone structure.
495.3) A New Chapter for Telangana’s Heritage
Acknowledgment of Gollala Gudi signifies the need to look beyond famous monuments and protect the less well-known buildings which make up India's historic story. The fact that the monument is close to Ramappa Temple makes it especially important since both of these structures represent the rich culture of Kakatiya civilization.
Hence, the acknowledgment means both the recognition and the responsibility for Telangana and for India. To Telangana, Gollala Gudi is one more sign of its glorious medieval past; to India, it is one more memory of magnificent architectural achievements of the past centuries.
With the process of preservation and protection of Gollala Gudi gaining momentum, it will have a chance to become not just the old temple in stone, but a living link to the culture of the past times.
