The Indian team gave a dazzling display in the game of kabaddi, winning the gold medal for both men and women in the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Both teams were able to win back their crowns from the Iranians in the final matches and proved once again that India is a consistent top nation in the sport of kabaddi in Asia.
The games took place between September 21 and 26 in the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium in Aichi. India participated in the event as the defending champions in both men and women categories, having won gold in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
523.1) Women Start the Golden Celebration
Indian women's team clinched the first gold. India defeated Iran 37-34 in the final match of the tournament. India had a tough time against Iran in the match as Iran kept trying to level up the scoreline.
With the halftime score line of 22-16, India got into an early lead but Iran put up a strong second-half performance. At 27-26, the deficit was cut down by Iran to just a single point. The super raid from Indian player Sanju Devi proved to be very important while Indian captain Pushpa Rana helped India build up an important cushion. India finally won the game with a scoreline of 37-34.
India won the third gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games through this match.
523.2) Men Complete the Golden Double
However, the Indian men’s team repeated their good show in the very next game against Iran by emerging victorious with a scoreline of 40-34 in the final match, thereby securing India's ninth gold medal in men’s kabaddi at the Asian Games.
It was quite an exciting final to witness since Iran were trailing India by just one point i.e. 18-17 in the first half itself. However, in the second half, India managed to increase their tempo with good raids and solid defence.
Arjun Deshwal and Devank Dalal were the star raiders for India, whereas Sumit and Jaideep were among those players who made some crucial contributions for India in the final match.
523.3) A Day to Remember for Indian Kabaddi
Securing two gold medals on the same day made the feat even more special for India. India had gone to Aichi-Nagoya with the aim of retaining the men's and women's gold medals, and both teams did so without any defeats.
India's double gold feat also highlights the strength of Indian kabaddi through generations of athletes who have been ensuring the country's presence in the Asian Games kabaddi tournament. The men's Asian Games kabaddi has been played in the Asian Games since Beijing 1990, whereas women's kabaddi made its debut at Guangzhou 2010.
The double gold success of India in Aichi-Nagoya can also be considered a new episode of India’s Asian Games kabaddi saga. As India defeated Iran 40-34 in the men’s event and Iran 37-34 in the women's event, a memorable double gold feat in kabaddi could once again be witnessed by India.
Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will go down as yet another glorious episode of India's kabaddi history with two teams, two finals, two wins and two gold medals.
