An age-old tale from Nagaland has earned a unique spot in the realm of international cinema. ** Angh, directed by Theja Rio as his debut film, has bagged the coveted Platform Competition award at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). As a result, the movie qualifies for the International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars.
The film takes place in 1963 in Nagaland and features an old man called Anghba, who is the village chief and his son. They continue to be amongst the few people who hold true to their ancient religion and way of living. The village that they live in has deserted and left them alone amid drastic changes taking place socially and culturally around them.
As per the culture of the Konyak Naga community, an “Angh” means a village chief or the head of some villages. Hence, it can be said that the lead character is at the crossroads of leadership, traditions, family and changing times.
515.1) A Story of Tradition, Faith and Change
Whereas Angh does not reduce Nagaland to being only a location of picturesque views, he makes the local culture an integral part of the movie. This is about how an existing lifestyle collides with the changes taking place. The main themes of the film include tradition, belief, family, memory, and cultural transformation.
The film was made using the 16 mm format, which enhances the atmosphere created by it. The film includes an Indigenous Naga ensemble, as well as British actor Douglas Henshall who takes on the role of the White Priest. The film also stars Anglong Konyak and Sobino Rengma as members of the lead ensemble.
As for the connection between Angh and the film Rio, the director had previously shot a short film with the same name. It had won the Special Jury Award at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. His next short, Ade (On A Sunday), was presented at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won Best Film at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
515.2) A Historic TIFF Recognition
Angh was the sole Indian movie chosen for the Platform Competition at TIFF in 2026. The Platform competition is one of the most important competitions held at the film festival where it concentrates on individual cinematic voices and points of view.
The jury of the Platform, which was chaired by the director, Pablo Trapero, awarded the film its prize on the basis of its unique point of view and emotions. This particular award is very special as it comes right after the debut of Rio's first film.
515.3) The Oscar Connection
There is another implication of TIFF success apart from the festival itself. According to the Academy’s new rules for the eligibility criteria which were announced for the 2026 festival cycle, a movie that wins the TIFF’s Platform Award becomes eligible for consideration in the category of the International Feature Film of the Academy Awards.
It should be noted that the nomination for the Academy Awards is something separate and needs further work of the Academy's selection process. At the moment, Angh is only eligible for Oscar but not nominated yet.
Nevertheless, Angh's success for Nagaland and Naga cinema can become a milestone event. This movie shows how the story that originates from the peculiarities of some community, language and culture can go outside of its geographic framework and touch the hearts of the viewers.
Starting from a remote village in 1960s Nagaland up to the glamorous ceremony of Toronto, Angh has transformed a very local story into a globally cinematographic one.
