Kusha Takes Flight: India’s Indigenous Air-Defence Shield Enters a New Era

India has made a significant move in the direction of developing indigenous air defence capabilities with the successful test launch of ‘Kusha’ – a long range surface to air missile (LRSAM) system that has been designed by the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The milestone launch was carried out on 23 July 2026 from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. This is a vital step that has been taken by India in the journey of becoming self-sufficient in modern technologies in defense.

The maiden launch was carried out against an electronic target which represented a high speed and high altitude aerial threat. The LRSAM Kusha missile system has managed to intercept the electronic target successfully, thereby proving the capability of the system to engage aerial threats.

470.1) A New Layer in India’s Air-Defence Architecture

The Kusha system aims to tackle a variety of air-borne threats. As per the Ministry of Defence, the system has the capability of taking down fighters, missiles, UAVs, and larger adversary planes at various altitudes and under varied circumstances.

This is especially important at a time when the nature of modern warfare is more characterized by the use of missiles, drones, airplanes, and other such advanced air borne systems. An air defence system of the modern times cannot depend on one weapon or interceptor for the job.

It needs various levels, which can detect, track and engage targets at varying ranges. The aim of Kusha is to provide the layering for the same, and to provide a domestic solution for India's long-range surface-to-air missiles.

470.2) From Missile to Complete Weapon System

One of the vital aspects of the Kusha program is that it is not merely about the development of the missile system. The entire weapon system comprises various interlinked parts which include the missile systems, radar systems, and command control and related systems.

According to the Ministry of Defence, such components have been developed by various DRDO labs in partnership with the Indian industry.

This is vital since the effectiveness of the air defense system depends on how effectively it links together all these sensor, decision-making and interceptor systems. Thus, the maiden flight is not only an achievement for the missile program but also for defense system engineering in India.

470.3) Reducing Dependence on Imports

The strategic importance of Kusha lies in the interception success attained in its first mission. In the past, India has relied on other nations' technologies to fill some gaps in their air-defence needs. Development of a locally-made system could serve as a means to cut dependence on other nations and enhance research and production capacity at home.

India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, referred to the successful test launch as an achievement in India’s research and development program of defence. Mr. Singh said that there are not many nations capable of developing long-range surface-to-air missile systems and emphasized that Kusha could assist in reducing dependence on imports and greatly boost India’s air-defence capabilities.

470.4) A Strategic Milestone

This test arrives in the wake of India’s continued development of an increasingly robust and indigenous air defence system ranging from short-range and counter-drone weapons to long-range missiles and radar systems to detect and defeat aerial threats.

The maiden test flight does not mean that the system is ready to be deployed right away, but more development and trials will definitely follow before it sees induction. However, the fact that the test has been carried out successfully is itself quite an important milestone.

Thus, the first test flight of the Kusha weapon system is not just about testing another missile but a statement about technological advancement as well. If the development of the system goes on as planned, the weapon could become one of the key elements of India’s future air defence system.
