From Nauru to Naoero: How the World’s Smallest Republic Reclaimed Its Original Name

Taking a significant step forward in embracing its cultural heritage, the Republic of Nauru, previously known as Nauru, has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero. This move has been championed by the country's president, David Adeang, and is more than a simple shift in spelling. It reflects a return to the country's indigenous cultural roots after decades of foreign dominance, as well as an effort to embrace the Republic of Nauru's cultural identity. This change has already received parliamentary approval and recognition in international circles, including at the UN.

While Nauru has been a familiar name to most people all over the world referring to the tiny republic in the central part of the Pacific Ocean inhabited by approximately 12,000 people and covering only 21 square kilometers, the country's people have always considered the name Naoero much more meaningful. "The adoption of Naoero as the official name of the country," states the government, "was necessitated by the fact that the name 'Nauru' came up as a result of difficulties experienced by colonial administrators to pronounce Naoero."

According to President David Adeang, the new name is a symbol of dignity, pride, and respect towards the ancestors of the country. It is important to note that the change of the name is not political but rather cultural since its purpose is to show respect to the language, culture, and spirit of resilience of the Naoeroan people. The name of the indigenous people was mentioned in the coat of arms of the country, and at the same time, it is used within the community.

Moreover, the changing of the name also represents a new trend in the modern world when countries try to restore the identity before colonial times. Such countries as Eswatini, Türkiye, and Czechia were promoting names which are more relevant to their languages and history. Thus, the choice of Republic of Naoero can be seen as an attempt to overcome colonial legacy.

Besides symbolism, the renaming has some practical consequences too. Official sources from international organizations have updated their data. The international code of the country would also undergo a change from NRU to NRO. Various government departments, official national bodies, ships, airplanes, and other official documentation will all get renamed to show the changed name of the country. Citizens of this country will now refer to themselves as dei-Naoero.

This renaming comes at an important juncture of the nation’s history. While Naoero struggles economically in the wake of its diminishing phosphate mining industry, it is also battling the growing menace of climate change, which is a great danger for most low-lying countries in the Pacific region. In this backdrop, the act of restoring the original name of the nation is a potent message of the importance of maintaining cultural identity.

The issue of language preservation is also important in regard to the change. The native language of Nauru, called locally Dorerin Naoero, has been historically very important for the identity of the nation. By choosing the traditional national name for the state, the government is hoping that in the future people would pay more attention to the language and thus help preserve cultural heritage in spite of globalization and other influences.

Thus, the change of the name of the country from Nauru to Republic of Naoero proves the point that the name of a country is much more than just a geographical name. Name carries within it all the history, language, identity, and cultural memory of the people. Even though it may take some time to change maps, passports, etc., but what really matters in this process is that people of this country have the opportunity to name themselves.
