Breaking Barriers: Inside the NSG’s Historic Women Commando Course

With the establishment of its very first Mahila Commando Conversion Course, the National Security Guard (NSG) has now made a huge move to increase the involvement of women within India’s best counter-terrorism forces. The historic course was meant to train the female staff members of the force to meet all of the standards and requirements of being an NSG commando.

The National Security Guard (NSG), which is widely recognized as the best counter-terrorism force in India, has previously been known for conducting specialized missions and operations that include hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, bomb disposal and other such services. With the inception of this very special commando conversion course for women, the NSG has made another historic shift in its mission and objectives.

The training is aimed at turning selected women personnel into well-trained commandos through specialized training programs. Participants in the training are supposed to be involved in strenuous physical training, weaponry training, tactical exercises, combat training, stamina exercises and operations scenario training. All these require not only outstanding physical fitness but also mental toughness, discipline, teamwork and ability to take decisions in extremely difficult conditions.

The introduction of the Mahila Commando Conversion Course is important not only in terms of the actual training. This marks a wider change in India’s security structure as more women are being engaged in difficult operational tasks. Women officers and personnel have proved themselves in service in the Indian Armed Forces, the police services and paramilitary forces. This program is an opportunity for women to join another tough specialized security environment in the country.

Being an NSG commando goes well beyond simply having physical strength. Counter-terrorism operations demand precision, coordination and immense presence of mind. A commando needs to function in small spaces, be prepared for unexpected threats, perform rescues of hostages and be a part of a well-coordinated group. Thus, the training program intends to hone both physical fitness and mental alertness of a person.

Such a course also holds great significance for women who want to join the army. The creation of a special path for women soldiers in the NSG sends out a strong signal that the standard of performance of a soldier does not depend on his/her gender but on skill and training. The existence of women commandos will also give an added advantage in certain circumstances when the operation involves women and children.

The move also comes in the backdrop of the evolving scenario of India’s security apparatus. With increasing complexity in threats, modern security agencies need a variety of high-caliber personnel to deal with various operational scenarios. An increased participation of women can help achieve both these objectives at once.

The inaugural Mahila Commando Conversion Course is hence not just any other training program. It is rather a step in the path to an all-inclusive and capability-based security organization. Those women who successfully manage to clear the tough training course not only gain the honor of belonging to an elite force but also pave the way for the future generation.

With the country becoming better prepared for countering the threat of terrorism, the women commandos of the NSG are going to play a key role in it. Their saga from rigorous training to operation would prove that courage, discipline and professional excellence have no boundaries of gender.
