An important step toward the construction of sustainable infrastructure in India has been taken with the inauguration of the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) creative environmental project to create "Bee Corridors" alongside national highways. The goal of the project is to turn roadside plants into natural areas that actively assist pollinators like honeybees.
Continuous areas of pollinator-friendly flora, such as flowering trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses, that offer nectar and pollen all year round are known as bee corridors. These plantations, in contrast to conventional decorative roadside landscaping, are intended to establish habitats that support bee populations and preserve ecological equilibrium.
In 2026–2027, NHAI intends to establish a minimum of three pollinator corridors and plant over 40 lakh trees beside national highways, with the Bee Corridor effort accounting for nearly 60% of these plants. To optimise ecological benefits, the corridors will be designed according to local climatic and geographic requirements.
To sum up, NHAI's Bee Corridor project serves as an example of how contemporary infrastructure and the environment may coexist, providing a framework for green highways that promote both ecological preservation and economic growth.
