One of the most revered cremation places in Hinduism, the historic Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi, is the subject of a massive reconstruction project that aims to improve amenities for pilgrims and tourists, improve safety, and upgrade infrastructure. Launched in late 2025 as part of the city's larger urban renewal strategy, the project aims to solve long-standing issues at this historic riverside cremation place along the Ganges, including as congestion, poor sanitation, and limited access routes.
Redesigned cremation platforms, well-organised areas for funeral ceremonies, better drainage and wood storage areas, public utilities including restrooms and drinking water stations, and expanded walkways to facilitate mobility are all included in the renovation plan. According to officials, these modifications are meant to maintain the ghat's sacred significance while making it safer, cleaner, and easier to access.
The Uttar Pradesh government and authorities have refuted these allegations, claiming that idols or temples have been destroyed and arguing that false information about the project has been spread via deceptive and artificial intelligence-generated visuals that have been shared on social media. Numerous FIRs have been filed by the local police against those who are allegedly disseminating fake images related to the reconstruction.
