On Friday of December 12 , the Union
cabinet approved the Shanti bill. This bill aims to achieve the target of
100 Gigawatt energy by 2047 from atomic energy .
The government of India is working very
rapidly to achieve its target of clean energy.
Under this target , nuclear energy will play a major role . It is a
source of clean energy which is alternate to conventional energy sources like
thermal energy , solar energy etc. In
February 2025 , our finance Minister announced a budget of 20000 crore for the
development of the Small Modular Reactor under the Nuclear energy mission
. Five Small modular reactors are to be developed till 2033 under this mission
.
The word SHANTI stands for SUSTAINABLE
HARNESSING AND ADVANCEMENT OF NUCLEAR ENERGY FOR TRANSFORMING INDIA. This
bill has paved the way for private companies to participate in production of
nuclear energy .
This bill
provides a comprehensible legal framework for companies participating in it . A
specialised tribunal and specialised authority is also mentioned in this bill.
The Department of Atomic Energy will retain the control over production and
supply of heavy water , segregation and treatment of nuclear waste . The
addressed liability will be issued under Civil liability for nuclear damage act
2010. This bill will change the provision of ATOMIC ENERGY ACT 1965.
Currently,
the nuclear energy power plants are owned by a state Agency named
National Power corporation of India Limited and its fully owned subsidiary
under this is Bhartiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam (BHAVINI) .Reactor operation and
weapon activities will be under control of the Indian Government.
This bill has opened the way for private
owners and companies which was very much required for the government to achieve
its aim . But the government must check the function and previous records of
those companies which are going to invest in this project .
