There was a time when people living single in an apartment bear very little cost as compared to a couple or a family. The cost of living was very low, expenses were very small and the most important thing was that money was much more saved than today itself. That living carried a freedom which has no cost but it became a myth in 2025. Singles are paying double for that room or apartment which is made for a family or more than two persons. That extra payment is called a singles tax. In the United States of America, the solo renters pay on an average more than 7000 USD in a year, which is commonly considered as singles tax. In the context of Bharat, the solo renters pay on an average more than 1800 USD to 3600 USD as singles tax. Not only the rent, solo living people also bear heavy costs for single packaged food, electricity bill, water bill, internet subscription etc. Also we have generally seen that the websites (which act as travel agents) have higher costs for solo travellers. Their family package is much cheaper than that of solo. Hotels, night stay, parties at night are also costlier for them. People are staying single longer, marrying later, or not at all. The bills and groceries, once minor inconveniences, accumulate into a quiet tax on time and solitude.
There is also a problem with solo renters.
They often get very far away from society.
People start ignoring, there is very much hoch poch in the room where
he/she lives. A proper systematic room shifts towards a mess.
But also, there is sovereignty in deciding
what to eat, what not to eat, how to spend our Holidays, how to live very
freely. These small triumphs of self determination makes the cost bearable.
Freedom may be expensive, but it brings a very different joy of living with
oneself.
