Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was born in Nadiad, Gujarat, on October 31, 1875, rose from modest origins to become a prominent role in India's independence movement and post-independence consolidation. He was a successful lawyer by trade, but when he joined the Mahatma Gandhi movement, his life changed drastically. He was dubbed "Sardar" after leading the Kheda Satyagraha in 1918 and the Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928.
Patel took on the difficult task of uniting the more than 500 princely states into the Union of India after becoming India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister following the country's independence in 1947. The administrative "steel-frame" that succeeding generations continue to inherit was established by his vision of a united India.
190.1) Why we celebrate National Unity Day?
190.2) A moment from Yesterday - Celebrations and Renewal
In a camp at the police headquarters in the Gomtinagar suburb of Lucknow, more than 100 police officials gave blood. As part of the ritual, the DGP led the vow and garlanded Patel's monument.
Hundreds of young people and NSS volunteers participated in the "Sardar@150 Unity March" around Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh to represent solidarity and the promise of an independent, drug-free India.
The yearly "Run for Unity" activities were launched throughout India, promoting unity and a sense of national determination.
190.3) Enduring Legacy
His influence can be seen in the state-unification process, civil services, and government structures of independent India.
His strategy emphasises that unity is social and moral as well as political and legal: respect for variety, discipline in service, and dedication to the common good.
190.4) Tribute in Action
What modest part can I play in fostering community cohesion?
How can I welcome the diversity around me and view it as a strength rather than a challenge?
Can I make a commitment to serve others by volunteering, helping out my fellow citizens, or participating actively and responsibly in society?
The "strength of a nation lies in its people united," according to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. As we consider his life and legacy, let us keep in mind that everyone contributes to unity, which is both a blessing and a responsibility.
