Recently , the Assam government has decided to table the Tiwari report on the Nellie massacre of 1983 .

The Nellie massacre is considered as one of the heinous massacres after independence . This heinous massacre happened due to a clash between All Assam student Union (AASU) and the Indian government on the ‘FOREIGNER' issue . The Assamese students wanted that foreigners or outsiders should not enter Assam.  They have been raising their demands since the 1970s. They were saying that if their demands were ignored , the result would be very bad for the state of Assam. They were saying that election of 1983 must be held after the solution of this problem . But the Indira government ignored this demand also and successfully completed the election . Seeking the tensed situation , 65 batalions of CRPF were sent to avoid any violence. Many Reporters said that it was just like a war situation . 150k soldiers were standing in their own country to save their peoples from their people. There was one soldier on 57 peoples. In January 1983 , two maim leaders of AASU named Prafulla Chandra Mahanta and Bhrigu Phukan were arrested . AASU with various student unions started protesting against the elections . According to Tiwari Commision, between January 1983 and March 1983  , 545 attacks were done on roads And bridges while 100 cases of kidnapping were also registered . There were 290 cases of police firing and lathi charge to control this agitation .

In that election, congress won 91 seats out of 109 seats . The AASU protested and said that these elections were done in a non democratic manner . They rejected their defeat .

At the peak of protests , the hindu Muslim clash were also started at various places which lead to Nellie massacre.  It started systematic manner from Barbori village on the morning of 18th February 1983 . Nellie and other villages were surrounded by huge amount of protesters carrying weapons and matches .  In that violence , about 1800 peoples were killed (official report) but according to various reports about 5000 peoples were killed .

Two years after this massacre , Assam accord was signed between AASU and Union Government. This massacre was considered as a black mark in the history of Assam.
