In India, people are suffering from a scorching heat wave in which an incredible 97 out of 100 hottest cities of the world have been identified within India. With temperature rising to such an alarming extent in almost all parts of India, from the desert plains of Rajasthan to the humid zones of Odisha, life has become unbearable for residents with health hazards looming large.
The situation in Balangir, Odisha, where temperatures shot up to 48°C, became so dire that streets became uninhabitable and people found themselves locked up inside their homes. Many other parts of the country such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra have also experienced such intense heat that even roads began to melt with scarce availability of drinking water.
It can be seen how the geographical distribution of this problem adds another layer to the existing problem of climate crisis in India. Such extreme climatic conditions have been occurring frequently due to climate change as per the opinion of many experts.
According to meteorologists, there are several reasons for the exacerbation of the current heatwave in India. They include delayed monsoon showers, dry winds blowing through northern and central India, and the effect of urban heat islands due to uncontrolled construction in cities and deforestation.
Millions of Indians who live on their income from outdoor jobs face the threat of death as a result of the heatwave. For many Indians, going outdoors during the hot afternoon becomes impossible due to unbearable conditions in which people are forced to endure high temperatures. The productivity of agricultural labor is also negatively affected, since crops are severely damaged due to high temperatures.
The impact of the heat wave on human health is extremely serious and often leads to irreversible results. Medical specialists report increased cases of dehydration, exhaustion, and sunstroke, especially among children and the elderly. Long-term exposure to temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius leads to damage to organs and nervous system dysfunction.
Schools in certain states have modified their schedules or decided to close temporarily to keep children safe from the extremely hot environment. Meanwhile, guidelines to drink plenty of water, stay indoors during the hottest times of the day, and minimize travel where possible have been issued.
However, although emergency responses may help somewhat, many think that the problem requires a more sustained approach. Scientists have often pointed out that South Asia has become one of the countries in the world at high risk of experiencing heatwaves. With the fast-growing population of cities and rising temperatures around the globe, the coming decades might be plagued by these weather phenomena again and again.
According to environmental activists, urgent action on urban planning should be taken. The creation of green areas, implementation of heat-resistant construction, improvement of water supply, and introduction of sustainable cooling methods should be considered a necessity. Of course, efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emission rates in order to slow down global warming need to be continued as well.
The heat wave currently underway is bringing to light some of the glaring disparities within society. While the better-off can take refuge from the heat in air-conditioned spaces and personal vehicles, millions of people with limited resources and living in crowded slums have little hope of escaping the effects of the harsh weather.
As India braces itself for monsoonal relief, these sweltering temperatures act as a testament to the reality of climate change, which is here and is impacting lives.
That India is leading the list of hottest cities in the world is not just a mere statement – rather, it is an early warning sign of what is in store if immediate steps are not taken to curb global warming.
