In today's world where everyone is more interested in quick fixes and immediate successes, consistency remains largely undervalued. Yet, there is no such thing as a successful person without a consistent approach to their life and work. The power of consistency is hard to underestimate as it helps develop skills, learn new things, and achieve your goals.
Consistency should never be confused with intensity. Most people start their journey towards success with huge ambitions and a strong desire to make their dream come true. However, reality soon starts hitting them hard. Things turn out to be much harder than expected, and many get discouraged. Nevertheless, there are people who manage to push through this rough patch due to their determination and dedication.
For instance, learning something new always involves many obstacles. If you want to become fluent in a foreign language, grasp scientific concepts, or code, your way will be full of challenges. Some days will pass by quickly as you will feel productive, but other days you will hardly make any progress. However, if you keep working every day regardless of how well you do, you will eventually succeed.
The other reason why consistency is effective is the principle of compounding. Just as interest in a savings account works, small but consistent efforts compound over time to create a big difference. Reading ten pages a day may not seem important, but over a period of one year, you will have read several thousand pages, which would be about several books. Writing a few hundred words daily will result in a full book at some point in time. The important factor is consistency rather than the effort itself.
Consistency helps build identity. When you engage in a specific activity consistently, you become that person. For instance, a person who writes every day starts to identify himself as a writer. The same happens with a learner who consistently studies for his class. The important thing about consistency is that it helps in building self-identity, and therefore, you no longer need to motivate yourself when engaging in such activities.
Obviously, staying consistent is quite hard. Things tend to happen in life that may interfere with one's plans. One can miss his/her schedule, fail to stay focused, or get discouraged. The thing is that such problems should not lead a person to give up entirely on their attempt. Consistency does not imply doing everything right. Missing a day is okay while not being able to continue is quite another matter. Being able to start again becomes quite as important as developing a habit.
Moreover, results do not always come promptly. In many cases, one needs to wait a bit to see positive changes. Such waiting can be frustrating for people who hope to see immediate outcomes. However, one needs to understand that things usually take some time to develop. Just like planting a seed in the ground will require waiting for the moment of its germination, one needs to wait some time until the effects become noticeable.
Finally, nowadays, there are numerous factors that can distract people from their activities. Technology has made people's lives too convenient and entertaining. It is very important for one to set some goals and develop certain rules to reach them.
After all, consistency is more a matter of design than discipline. Once processes have been put in place, it becomes easy to form consistent habits. Consistent people don't rely on sheer willpower; rather, they design their surroundings to work towards their goals. In other words, they make it easier for themselves to perform desirable behaviors and harder for themselves to engage in undesirable behaviors.
At last, consistency represents a subtle agreement with oneself. By definition, it involves making a promise to be better, to move forward. It requires neither perfection nor extra effort; all one needs is to persist.
While most people admire breakthroughs and achievements, what helps achieve them is consistency. When next time you feel tempted to look for instant gratification, just keep in mind that true success isn't made in one big step, but gradually built in smaller steps each day.
