The Great Nicobar Project

Recently,  the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given permission to a great nicobar project which costs around 81000 cr rupees. This project will be built on an area of 166 km².

The area of Great Nicobar Island is about 910 square kilometers and the southernmost point of India that is Indira Point is also located on this island. This project will consist of an Economic and defense hub for Bharat. This economic and defense hub has mainly four major components:

  1. Integrated township with defence facility (149 km²)
  2. Transhipment port hub (8.45 km²)
  3. Civil and military airport (7.66 km²)
  4. 450 Mega Volt ampere gas and solar  based power plant (0.39 km²)

The Transhipment facility will be Developed at Galathea Bay which is home for nesting sites of Leather Black Turtles on the Bank of Galathea River. It will be the second Transhipment facility in India. The first facility of this type is situated at Vizinzham Port of Kerala. Since, in this project a civil and military airport will also be Developed.  It will be just second airport after INS Baaz Naval Air station.

This region is very much strategically important whether in geopolitics, maritime trade and geographic areas. Since Andaman and Nicobar are very close to the Malacca Strait, it becomes very important for international trade. This region sees about 95000 ships per year and is responsible for 30% of trades on this route. Due to the development of the Transhipment hub it will give a better competition to ports like Colombo, Singapore etc.

Our environmentalists are in a very sad mode after this decision of NGT. Because this development will destroy a huge amount of flora and fauna. It is expected that more than 1 million trees will be in Felling mode while the tribes like Nicobarese and Shompen will came to an end. Because these tribes always were very far from the developing areas . Their homes are mainly forest and and their livelihood totally depends on it. This Novobar Island is a part of Sundaland Biodiversity. A bird named Nicobar Megapode is famous for making its home on land and after that it nests there. Due to disturbance on the mainland their routine will be disturbed and they can come to an end.

This project is very important from a strategic point of view, but our forests will get destroyed. They are one of the biggest ecosensitive zones of India. The project must be in pipeline and take care of birds, Turtles and other creatures living on it.
