India’s Green Leap: Second in the World for LEED-Certified Space in 2025

With the exception of the US, India achieved the second-highest global rating for LEED-certified green building space in 2025, marking a significant milestone for sustainable development. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) announced this accomplishment, which highlights the country's increasing dedication to ecologically friendly building methods and effective building operations.

One of the most well-known green building certification programs in the world is LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It assesses buildings according to standards such sustainable site development, indoor environmental quality, materials use, and energy and water efficiency. Structures that adhere to these guidelines show better occupant wellbeing and a less environmental effect.

India trailed closely behind Mainland China, which topped the list outside of the US and outperformed many established economies, in the 2025 worldwide rankings. The gross square meters (GSM) of LEED-certified space that India attained throughout the year—a crucial metric for the adoption of green buildings and the sustainability of real estate—was used to evaluate the country's performance.

India registered almost 16 million GSM of LEED-certified space in 2025, with more than 600 projects obtaining certification, according to the most recent data. This represented a substantial improvement over its previous standing and showed how quickly sustainable building and retrofitting were spreading throughout industries like offices, industrial parks, retail, hospitality, education, and more.

The increase in LEED for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) certifications has been a notable trend in India's green building expansion. LEED O+M applies to existing facilities and places an emphasis on enhancing energy performance, water usage, waste reduction, and overall operational efficiency, in contrast to certifications that are exclusively for new construction. This change demonstrates that India is improving the sustainability of its current built environment in addition to constructing green buildings.

Over 147 million square meters of building space were covered by more than 7,500 commercial projects worldwide that received LEED certification in 2025. India's share of this total demonstrates its expanding influence in the global green construction movement, particularly as developing nations adopt environmental, social, and governance (ESG) norms and sustainable development goals.

Given the increased awareness of climate change, resource efficiency, and long-term operational savings among developers, occupiers, and investors, this second-place rating is a significant accomplishment for India's real estate and construction sector. Additionally, it supports India's larger environmental objectives, such as lowering carbon intensity and making obligations under international climate frameworks.

In addition to demonstrating national progress, India's LEED achievement in 2025 sends a strong statement that green development is no longer a niche endeavour but rather a fundamental component of contemporary urban expansion and environmental stewardship as sustainable construction methods gain popularity.
