Dosti-17: Strengthening Maritime Brotherhood in the Indian Ocean

Another important turning point in the maritime cooperation of the three near neighbours in the Indian Ocean region—India, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka—was reached with the seventeenth edition of Exercise Dosti, also referred to as Dosti-17. The practice genuinely captures the spirit of cooperation and trust that these countries share, and the word "Dosti" means friendship. This trilateral Coast Guard exercise, which is frequently conducted, aims to promote marine safety, increase regional security, and improve collaboration.

The three nations' Coast Guards came together for Dosti-17 to rehearse cooperative maritime operations. The participating forces demonstrated their preparedness to handle marine issues through synchronised training. Through real-time training and simulations, the exercise's harbour and sea phases enabled staff to share professional expertise and enhance interoperability.

Strengthening collaboration in combating maritime dangers like piracy, drug trafficking, illicit fishing, and human trafficking was one of Dosti-17's main goals. International trade and economic stability depend on the safety of the Indian Ocean region, which is an essential maritime route. The three countries show their shared commitment to protecting these seas through these drills.

Search and rescue missions, pollution response exercises, firefighting drills, and boarding operations were among the manoeuvres that took place during the exercise's maritime portion. These exercises put the participating Coast Guards' operating capabilities to the test and improved their capacity to act swiftly in actual emergencies. Throughout the drills, the importance of coordinated communication and collaborative planning was emphasised.

In addition to providing operational training, Dosti-17 promoted camaraderie and cross-cultural interaction among the staff members involved. Officers and crew members got the chance to network, exchange best practices, and form business partnerships. Such interactions strengthen mutual understanding and promote trust among the maritime forces of the three countries.

The drill also highlights how crucial regional marine cooperation is becoming. Cooperation between neighbouring countries has grown crucial due to the rise in marine traffic and new non-traditional security challenges. Dosti-17 provides a forum to better coordinate responses to shared concerns in the Indian Ocean and to harmonise strategy.

For Sri Lanka, India, and the Maldives, marine security is closely related to both economic growth and national security. Because of their close proximity, cooperation is both necessary and practical. Dosti-17 sends a powerful message of regional unity and stability while strengthening the trilateral alliance.
