The emergence of Bengaluru-Karnataka as the second largest cluster of AI-natives globally in Asia after Beijing, as per the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) 2026, is a major milestone for the region in the context of making its presence felt across the globe in artificial intelligence, deep tech, and digital transformation. This further strengthens the case for Karnataka to be viewed as the innovation capital of India.
What started as an IT hub in the last decade for the country has emerged as one of the strongest AI ecosystems. The region is home to several startups focused on AI, research organizations, VC firms, GCCs, and large technology corporations that have been playing a catalytic role in transforming several industries through innovative solutions in healthcare, mobility, financial services, fintech, and climate technology.
The achievement comes after Bengaluru-Karnataka was named the most valuable startup ecosystem in the world, per Startup Genome’s latest report. The region has shown remarkable growth in startup valuations, exits worth billions of dollars, and early-stage funding rounds. The ecosystem's valuation has seen a huge jump in the past few years, fueled largely by strong listings and investments in the startup sector.
Bengaluru is home to some of the best engineers and researchers in India, and therefore the availability of such talents has allowed startups in Bengaluru to develop advanced AI systems in areas like machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, robotics, and data analytics. Besides, there are several big multinational companies with huge AI research centers based in the city. This has created an atmosphere of collaboration among academia, industries, and startups to tackle difficult problems.
It should be noted that the role of Karnataka in building this ecosystem cannot be overstated. With the help of favorable startup policies, innovation hubs, incubators, funds, and even partnerships with foreign countries, the Karnataka Government has encouraged entrepreneurs and innovators in the field of technology. Some of the recent policies made by the state government include initiatives that focus on advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, and deep tech innovations.
One thing is worth mentioning – Karnataka is moving from being a single-city state innovation system towards a multi-city one. Indeed, there are now attempts to attract startup entrepreneurs not only in Bengaluru but also in other cities like Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi, Dharwad, and Belagavi.
Investor confidence is another significant catalyst for development. Bengaluru remains one of the primary cities in India receiving startup investments as well as one of the largest centers in the country for venture capitalists, angels, and corporations to pursue innovation through their investments. The strong pipeline of capital allowed startups to grow at incredible rates and attract international partnerships and markets.
With the evolution of artificial intelligence transforming all sectors across the globe, the rise of Bengaluru-Karnataka to the second position as an Asian AI-native cluster signifies much more than local achievements. This means that the state has the ability to become one of the most innovative places in the world capable of contributing to AI technology advancements.
The transformation of Bengaluru from “India’s Silicon Valley” into a global center for AI innovation indicates that Bengaluru-Karnataka not only participates in the technological revolution but helps to shape it as well.
